Recently I was asked by a family member "So what does Okinawa look like?" As I looked through our blogs and hundreds of pictures we have taken I see that we have not posted any pictures of what to us is now the daily sights of Okinawa, but to someone who has never set foot here would find interesting. I guess the buildings and houses are so different from what we are used to in the states it at first startled us then it became unimpressive, for lack of better words. The homes here are not built for beauty but for withstanding the very high winds that can hit during a typhoon, or for the occasional earthquakes that may hit. The Japanese culture is a very private one. Thus there are fairly high privacy walls that surround the homes, and unlike back home where you can drive through a neighborhood on any particular night and peek into someones home who may have chosen to not draw the shades that night, the Japanese always draw their shades. Because of the size of the Island and the amount of people living here the homes are very close together and there are many apartment buildings and towers. So I will make it a point to capture more of the everyday Okinawa for those of you that are wondering. We are working on a "Lost in Translation" Blog. Lots of laughs to come. Enjoy.
